Collecting data in a meaningful and useable way is not an easy task. This portfolio project idea has the potential to demonstrate a full range of skills that are important to being a success in data science.

If done well, taking the time to collect new data and prepare it for analysis and then to share that data with others shows your ability to work through the first several phases of the data science process cycle (shown here).

Data Science Portfolio Inspiration

Inspiration for this project comes from graduate students and doctoral students that I’ve worked with over the years. In many ways the inspiration for this project idea also comes from my own doctoral studies. Many graduate students are in the business of collecting data in order to anser a research question and then also write a dissertation or a thesis.

If you’ve already written a dissertation or a thesis consider using those data sources to create portfolio entries under this idea too.
